At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, their interpretation of creative AI. Tim Cook describes it as a type of "personal intelligence" that "makes your most personal products more useful and enjoyable."
Apple Intelligence can access your calendar, mail, and other data stored on your various Apple devices. It is built on huge language and diffusion models that work on the device. Apple's version of AI is capable of working within the operating system and generating text or graphics within any app on your phone, tablet, or laptop, such as Microsoft Copilot in Windows.

According to Apple, information on devices is encrypted and sent only to cloud servers built with Apple silicon processors. All of Apple's intelligence capabilities are compatible with any Apple device with an M-series chip or iPhone model A17 or higher.

What is “Apple Intelligence”?

While Apple's new personalized AI system should "help appease nervous investors," the company's ChatGPT integration could also expose and exacerbate deeper problems, according to Ben Wood, principal analyst at research firm CCS Insight. "Apple Intelligence" is not a stand-alone product or software.

Whether it's a writing assistant polishing your message drafts or your diary figuring out the best route to your next meeting, it will be integrated into every app and Apple product users use. In this respect it is comparable to Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant, but activation is free. Siri, the voice assistant that Apple bought in 2010, has been updated with a chattier appearance and additional features to make it easier for users to move between apps and devices. "The implication is that Apple is recognizing its limitations because ChatGPT will start at a point where Siri will no longer be able to help a user," Mr Wood told the BBC.

During Monday's speech, Apple was eager to stress the security of Apple Intelligence. While more complex operations that require more processing power will be moved to the cloud, no data will be stored there, according to the statement, some processing will be done on the device itself. This is what consumers paying high fees for Apple's privacy assurances will need to know. According to Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, the technology "puts powerful generative models at the heart of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac."

Artificial Intelligence Features to be Inaugurated with iOS 18

An overview of some of the new features of iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence.

ChatGPT

Apple is starting to incorporate the flagship GPT-4o from OpenAI into its environment, though not as much as many had hoped. It will replace Siri as the primary assistant by offering more resources, logic and data delivery. Users won't need to exit the tool they're currently using to send an image, document, or text prompt to ChatGPT. All you have to do is "Send to ChatGPT" after opening Apple Intelligence.Siri will also have access to the same functionality. It will be able to use the power of GPT-4o to provide resources or answer questions that it is unable to address with its native models.

For example, you can send ChatGPT a picture of your fridge and request a recipe. ChatGPT will then use the image to recognize the content and generate a recipe.

You won't need to switch apps because all the functionality is built into the Siri UI, so you won't even realize it's gone. ChatGPT users benefit from privacy safeguards already in place, such as hidden IP addresses and no storage requests by OpenAI. ChatGPT's data usage guidelines apply to users who choose to link their accounts," Apple said.

Creating Images

Apple is integrating generative visuals through diffusion models similar to DALL-E or Midjourney, in addition to generating text in response to gestures. This also applies to creating gifs and emoticons in notes or messages. "If you want to wish a friend a happy birthday, you can create a picture using creative AI," the business said. Like text creation, image creation will be system-wide and enabled in a variety of apps, such as Notes, Pages, and Keynotes.

A new program called Image Playground will let users create "fun pictures in seconds" in three different ways: sketch, illustration and animation. Apart from being integrated into multiple apps like Messages, it will have its own separate app.

Nothing is transmitted from the device as all images are generated using a locally driven diffusion model. There are several concepts and themes to choose from. Like other AI image tools, you can choose a style you like, add a person from your photo bank, and describe the photo by typing a description.

You can create custom visualizations in messages that are relevant to your conversations. For example, if you're discussing an upcoming hiking vacation, you might show a sketch of a friend enjoying a trek. While its local operation is excellent, it won't replace the photo-realism of mid-century for MetaAI's speedy image generation on Instagram or WhatsApp.

Brand New Siri

With the redesign, Siri will now be able to understand and react to more natural language. For example, the new Siri will still be able to understand what you're saying even if you change your mind or fumble in the middle of a sentence.

When Siri needs more AI intelligence and computational power, it will be able to connect to ChatGPT or other models in the future. Examples of these scenarios include examining a picture or generating complex responses to narratives or sentences.

Additionally, the updated Siri offers details about settings and equipment within Apple's ecosystem. This means it can adjust based on a common description, so you won't have to write a message now and search through several menus to discover the option to send it later.

Photo Editing

The Photos app itself is getting a major update, including a new design and the option to create personal galleries and categories. Thanks to AI, er, Apple Intelligence, it can also edit photos more efficiently. With the new Cleanup feature, users can tap a button to find and remove any distracting elements from the background of a photo.

Better memories is another innovation coming to photos. Now you can write a natural language description and Apple Intelligence will pick the appropriate images to create a memory, including a song from Apple Music.

Apple Stock Climb After Artificial Intelligence

Shares of Apple Inc. hit record highs on Tuesday, rising more than 6 percent after the company unveiled its eagerly anticipated AI plans at WWDC, its annual developer conference. Apple stock was up $12.05, or 6.24 percent, at $205.17 at 1:25 PM EDT. With Tuesday's increase, Apple's market value now exceeds $3 trillion once again. During the annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, the iPhone maker showed off several artificial intelligence-related technologies for iOS 18. It also announced a collaboration with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

Investors are hoping consumers will be willing to shell out more for the next iPhone generation, as Apple's AI announcements have allayed concerns about the company's growth. The largest stock buyback scheme in US history, valued at $110 billion, was launched by Apple last month. The AI-powered updates aim to help Apple device users complete more activities faster. However, since the features demand the latest CPUs, the full suite of AI features will only work on the latest iPhone 15 series. However, the business will also provide a ton of upgrades for other iPhone models. The business will use AI to let users create "Genmojis," or custom emojis.

Availability of Artificial Intelligence in Apple Devices

The free version of Apple Intelligence is limited to US English only and will be available in the fall for iOS 18, iPad OS 18, and macOS Sequoia only. Any M-series Mac or iPad will do. Intel Macs are not supported. It requires a Mac or iPad running an Apple Silicon chip. Due to the requirement for at least the A17 chip, Apple Intelligence will only be accessible on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, or later.
