NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg Discuss the Future of AI at SIGGRAPH 2024
The SIGGRAPH 2024 conference was one of the biggest events of the tech industry where NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang had a chat with Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This discussion was mainly based on the questions of how artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping up the future through changing the dynamics of technology, business, and society. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, stressed on NVIDIA’s progress in AI especially the latest GPUs that have been developed to advance machine learning and deep learning. Huang also focused on the company’s Grace Hopper Superchip where it integrates the aspects of high computing with Artificial intelligence to transform industries like healthcare, self-driving cars.
Mark Zuckerberg talked about Meta’s focus on AI and related innovations, including the improvement of user experience in the Meta products. He also spoke about the progress in Generative AI and NLP at Meta, which is acompany’s efforts to develop more natural and adaptive communication with the users. Also, Zuckerberg mentioned the PyTorch – an open source machine learning library, which has grown 1.5 times over the year.
Both leaders accepted that the advancement of artificial intelligence technologies is very fast and there is a need to consider ethics and rules. Huang stressed that it is imperative that as AI advance, so does the security to prevent the loss of confidentiality. He quoted a research finding suggesting that 60% of companies’ key AI concern is data privacy and security.
Closely related to this, Zuckerberg noted that the future of AI depends on the solution of the problem of AI bias. Meta also has some efforts in building ethical and responsible AI solutions: Mark mentioned that 70% of the company’s AI projects today are related to bias elimination.
It also involved the topic of cooperation when it comes to the creation of AI. Huang and Zuckerberg focused on the importance of cooperation between the leaders of technological corporations, universities, and states. Huang disclosed that NVIDIA is collaborating with some of the world’s top universities to further the study of AI, helping boost the annual rate of publication of AI papers by 20%.
Zuckerberg also pointed out that Meta is engaged in inter-industry efforts like the Partnership on AI that has more than 100 members to tackle the problems and possibilities of AI.
From the focus of Huang and Zuckerberg, the future of AI is expected to revolutionalise many areas of life. According to Huang, AI will revolutionalize the healthcare sector and help in accurate diagnosis and prescription of the right treatment. He quoted a study that estimated that AI could potentially generate $150 billion in annual savings to the healthcare sector by 2026 through optimization of work and results.
Zuckerberg spoke more about how AI will be used in education to provide equal opportunities for learning to everyone in the world. He also spoke about Meta’s educational programs that are based on Artificial Intelligence and have already benefited over 10 million students worldwide, enhancing their learning experience.
